James Clement, of Buthropp Bridge in County Durham, England, was a Flushing Town Clerk. He originally arrived in Flushing as John Bowne's (1627-1695) indentured servant in 1663 and assumed the office after finishing his six-year contract. The indenture agreement was made in Amsterdam. Clement was to serve Bowne for six years in exchange for one-half the cost of Clement's passage to New Netherland and a parting payment of two suits of clothes and 240 pounds of merchantable tobacco. |
